Whether it is the epic battles of the Mahabharata, or one of the earliest known Buddhist settlements. St Thomas visiting the subcontinent to spread the gospel of Christ or Mohammad Bin Qasim bringing the message of Allah and his Prophet (PBUH). Or the birthplace of Sikhism… The land of Punjab has been blessed to be a cradle for the five largest faiths in the world.

 

Holy sites of Hinduism are spread across the Punjab, especially the temples belonging to the pre-Mughal era of the Hindu Shahi Dynasty The jewel in the crown is the temple complex of Katas Raj, built around a sacred pond, said to have been formed by the tears of Shiva, when he was grieving the loss of his wife Sita. This temple is mentioned in the epic poem Mahabharata and legend has it that its foundation was laid by none other than Krishna himself. Acknowledging its historical and religious significance, the government of Punjab has begun a massive preservation and restoration effort at this site.

 

Nestled in the verdant Margalla Hills are the well-preserved remains of the Gandhara civilization and the ancient metropolis of Taxila. It is one of the earliest civilizations known to man where Buddhism thrived and in its time was a beacon of knowledge, peace, prosperity, and progress in the region. It is said that the Apostle St Thomas visited the subcontinent in 40 AD to spread the gospel of Jesus.

Today 70 percent of Pakistan’s Christian population calls Punjab home and Punjab has some of the most beautiful cathedrals in the region such as Sacred Heart Cathedral, Lahore, St. Joseph's Cathedral, Rawalpindi, and Saint Mary's Cathedral in Multan. Islam arrived in Sindh with Mohammad Bin Qasim and quickly reached Punjab

 

A rich tradition of Islamic Mysticism known as Sufism soon took hold and gave rise to an era of music, poetry, and spirituality.

Today, the shrines of Muslim Poets, scholars, and preachers such as Data Ganj Bakhsh also known as Data Hajveri in Lahore, Shah Rukn-e-Alam and Bahauddin Zakriya in Multan and Khawaja Ghulam Farid of Mithankot attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year to pay homage & seek spiritual guidance.

 

Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, the 5th largest organized religion in the world was born in Nankana Sahab in Punjab.

His birthplace Gurdwara Janam Asthan is one of the five most important Sikh pilgrimage sites, which also include the Gurdwara Panja Sahib in the city of Hasan Abdal and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur – the final resting place of Baba Guru Nanak. The sites are visited by thousands of Sikhs from neighboring India, Europe and the US every year.
