Located in the ancient city of Multan, often called the City of Saints, the Shrine of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya stands as one of Pakistan’s most significant centers of Islamic spirituality and Sufi devotion. Built in the early 13th century, it is the resting place of Hazrat Sheikh Bahauddin Zakariya Multani (1171–1262 CE), a revered Sufi scholar and founder of the Suhrawardiyya Order in South Asia. His teachings emphasized love, tolerance, and service to humanity, influencing generations of scholars and mystics. The shrine remains a symbol of unity and peace, drawing thousands of pilgrims and visitors each year who seek spiritual solace and divine blessings.

Architecturally, the Bahauddin Zakariya Shrine is a stunning example of early Indo-Islamic design, blending multicolored glazed tiles, geometric brickwork, and Persian-style domes. The tomb’s structure is unique — a square base supporting an octagonal drum topped by a large white dome, creating a harmonious blend of simplicity and grandeur. The use of blue and white faience tiles, characteristic of Multani craftsmanship, gives the shrine its distinct aesthetic identity. The complex includes courtyards, prayer halls, and lodging spaces for travelers and devotees, showcasing both spiritual significance and Mughal-influenced architectural artistry.

The annual Urs festival of Bahauddin Zakariya is among the most vibrant spiritual gatherings in Pakistan, marked by qawwali performances, Sufi poetry, and acts of charity. Managed by the Auqaf Department of Punjab, the shrine continues to be a living hub of faith, culture, and community service. Beyond its religious importance, it stands as a historical testament to Multan’s role as a cradle of Islamic scholarship and Sufi mysticism. With its rich legacy and enduring serenity, the Bahauddin Zakariya Shrine remains a beacon of spiritual enlightenment — a place where devotion, art, and history converge to celebrate the timeless message of divine love and human harmony.
